There’s plenty to love about wandering the Taste Market; the breathtaking Southern Ocean views and the endless opportunities to sip, snack and discover regional makers. But for those ready to go beyond the market and dive deeper into what makes Great Southern wines so special, this year’s two ticketed masterclasses hosted by two of WA’s top sommeliers, Cyndal Petty and Emma Farrelly, are where the region truly comes to life.
Held just steps away at the Albany Surf Lifesaving Club, these sessions peel back the layers of the land, offering a rare chance to taste, learn and connect in an intimate setting. If you’re spending your Sunday at Middleton Beach and are interested in the wines and flavours of the region, consider these masterclasses not just an add-on, but a must-do to round out your experience.
AN ODE TO DRINKING AND EATING FROM ONE LAND
Hosted by Cyndal Petty. 11:15am – 12:15pm

This is a masterclass in connection where you will learn the basics of food and wine matching, while exploring the art of eating and drinking from one region, shaped by the landscapes of Western Australia’s Great Southern. Think Albany rock oysters with Porongurup Riesling. Sea blight, samphire, and stories of the land and sea that raised them.
Hosted by famed Sommelier and Wine Writer Cyndal Petty, this is a delicious celebration of place, felt through its produce, its people, and the harmony between food and wine grown side by side.
GROUNDED: EXPLORING THE SUB-REGIONS OF GREAT SOUTHERN
Hosted by Emma Farrelly. 12.45pm – 1.45pm

Journey through the five subregions that define Western Australia’s Great Southern — Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongurup, Denmark and Albany. Each landscape tells a unique story of climate, soil and site, from the ancient granite of Porongurup to the loamy river valleys of Frankland. Discover how the interplay of cool maritime influences, elevation and geology shapes wines of remarkable purity, tension and individuality.
Hosted by State Buildings Director of Wine Emma Farrelly, this is an immersive tasting that reveals the true diversity and quiet power of the Great Southern. If you’re interested in discovering the subtle (and sometimes dramatic) shifts that soil and site bring, this masterclass is ideal, especially if you’re curious about which sub-region styles resonate with you most.
